My mom used to take my grandma and Ms. Smith to town to shop and eat out . Grandma's my dad's mom and Ms. Smith's my uncle's mother in law. Got that ? It entailed dragging old ladies from store to store , helping with car doors , canes ,grocery carts, loading the trunk, and then taking them to eat . Yes, My momma's a saint . Seriously ! Ms. Smith was the quilt maker from Tenn. . Grandma wanted to make one . Mom and I decided that we would like to give it a try . We would go to my uncle's house and we started with a simple strawberry quilt . Our background blocks were TORN from a white sheet . Oh yes , old school baby . DeleteWay to go Wendy! Lovin this Blog girlfriend!
ReplyDeleteI do the straight grain binding. Question: you do a 2 1/2" strip, but is your binding FULL of the seam when you turn the edge? I have seen bindings that are 'empty' and they do tend to wear such as yours in this picture. I use a 3/8" seam in my binding strip, which seems to fill the entire bound edge.
ReplyDeleteDee , I follow a quilting magazine and the article was called Barbara's Beautiful Binding. For larger quilts, it said 2 1/2 inches and a 3/8 inch seam. For smaller quilts use 2 1/4 with a 1/4 sewn seam. I THINK! Will pull ole faithful out and recheck in the am. I think it's looks so flat now due to the batting I was told to use, Mountain mist. I use Quilter's Dream now and looking back feeling the quilts, mm feels like nothing. It was nice to handquilt on! Lol I like a nice full fat binding. I want it to as pretty as the quilt. I only made the straight binding once. Maybe I had just thinner fabric or the combined of all of the above made it wear. It 's on a Jewel Box quilt that has been used for years.
